Palace of the Winds

Hawa Mahal is a breathtaking building located in the Pink City area of Jaipur in the old town. This famous building boasts some of the most unique architecture I’ve ever seen and dates back hundreds of years. Also known as “The Palace of the Winds”, it’s actually the tallest building in the world without a foundation.

Originally built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, this building was erected around the same time Jaipur became the new capital of Rajasthan. Built as an extension of the Royal City Palace where the King ruled from and was a blend of Hindu Rajput architecture and the Islamic Mughal architecture.

The Palace of the Winds is a popular and prominent landmark renowned for its rich cultural representation and architecture.

The elaborately decorated building with its lattice windows and screened balconies was actually created for the royal Rajput women who traditionally seldom appeared in public. This way the women could view the daily events and festivities on the main street from inside, allowing them a sense of freedom while keeping with their customs.

If you’re looking for a good place to take a picture, then you will want to head across the street where there are a few good spots to get a good snap.

There is this building across the street with a second story and third story balcony where you can take pictures from. There will be people waiting at the ground level to walk you up to their cafe where they say it’s “free” but then when you get there they expect you to order a drink.

On the second floor, there is a free spot to take pics that aren’t quite as good as the third floor but you’ll only be asked to check out the goods inside the stores on either side of the balcony. These also make for a great view of the distant hilltop forts and the steep zigzagging trail up to them.
