Fun Activities in Singapore

Finding fun activities in Singapore wat hard with so many cool things to do and see wasn’t hard, it came down to trying to squeeze them all into my 3-day trip while I was there. I seldom stay in Hostels but in Singapore I made an exception and stayed at a really nice one called Adamson Lodge, which is conveniently located in Little India and also right across the street from an MRT line. I’ll do my best to provide as much information from my experience combined with other local recommendations from when I was there to make the most of your trip to SG.

Gardens By The Bay

Going to Gardens by the bay is kind of a no-brainer since it is one of the most popular and well-known attractions in Singapore. If you decide to go here be prepared for a marvelous light show stroll through the gardens but it is best to go there at sunset/night, and there is also a light show at night, at 7:45pm, 8:45pm. It lasts about 15 mins.

There is also a laser and light show called ‘Wonder Full’ located at the Marina Bay Sands Promenade (it’s located beside the LV shop) and it lasts about 15 minutes. Timings are:

Sunday – Thursday: 8:00pm, 9:30pm

Friday & Saturday: 8:00pm, 9:30pm, 11:00pm

Marina Bay Sands

Marina Bay Sands is probably the most iconic and well-known destination to visit while in Singapore and for good reason. The building itself is a giant cruise ship in the sky overlooking the Marina with incredible views and expensive drinks, this is an absolute must if you are looking for fun activities in Singapore.

The bar on the roof of the Marina Bay Sands actually has free entry (but Wednesdays are only free for the ladies). Many bars in Singapore have ladies night on Wednesdays where they get in free and also usually a free drink.

Another rooftop bar which you can go up to entirely for free is Level 33 at Marina Bay Financial Center. It overlooks the Marina Bay Skyline, so do check it out if you have time. But, tripods are not allowed for cameras! They’ve got pretty good beer as well. It can also be quite crowded, so it’s advised that you go early if you want some breathtaking rooftop views.

And, lastly, there is 1-altitude (view pictured above) on One Raffles Place, the tallest rooftop bar in Singapore. I was told there will be cover charges, but when I went we paid $25 to get in, which included a drink. The views are incredible though and opposite Marina Bay Sands so it was worth it for sure.

Clark Quay

Clarke Quay is a great nightlife area to hang out, with colorful old colonial houses, its filled with live music, and people. It lies along the Singapore river, so its a great place to walk by, even if you are not having a drink. This is a nice place for various Fun Activities in Singapore all in one place.

There is also a spot where you can view the Singapore skyline, for FREE! It is called Ion Sky, at the top of the shopping mall Ion Orchard. You will need to take the elevator to the 4th floor, and then proceed to another elevator to go up to the 55th floor. You’ll be able to see loads of unique buildings from up there. But, it may not always be opened, as the place can be reserved for private events. The mall is located right on Orchard Road MRT.

Another location is called Skyville at Dawson, its an apartment with a rooftop view of the South and North of Singapore. Nearest MRT will be Queenstown.

Arab Street

There is also the Arab Street you can check out, which is the Arab/Muslim enclave of Singapore(or at least it used to be) which has some pretty unique shops and stalls selling Arab fabrics, mats, lamps and souvenirs, as well as a pretty cool looking mosque (and one of the oldest!)

China Town

And of course, Chinatown. Though Chinatown here isn’t like that of the Chinatowns elsewhere in the world, it’s no longer a Chinese enclave and is purely a tourist attraction. Here, you will find Chinese souvenirs, goods, snacks, and foods. I only went here for lunch.

Little India

There is also Little India, and I recommend Mustafa Center in Farrer Park. (which is right beside Little India) It’s a 24/7, shopping mall that opens for all day, all night, and all year. It is one of the best places to go if you intend on doing shopping, and one of the most complex shopping malls you will ever enter.

Another area I highly recommend is the Parkview Square located in the Bugis area. This building is both an office and an embassy, but, the interior architecture is very unique ( It looks like something out of the movie ‘The Great Gatsby’/or if you play video games, Rapture from Bioshock) and has a 1930s classic feel to it, with really exquisite carvings on the walls and roofs! So definitely do check it out if possible! Its this huge brown office building that looks like it fits into the world of Gotham City. This is also where you can visit Atlas bar (pictured below), which was ranked the 15th best bar in the world when I went and is absolutely incredible inside.

Sentosa

If you plan on going to Sentosa, skip eating or buying on the island, things there are super expensive. Instead, there is a mall just before that island, it’s cheaper to dine there. There are tons of things to see or do. If going by foot, the whole island is free but each individual attraction will cost you extra. Besides, if you want a beach, you can head to Siloso beach, where they have man-made sand imported from Indonesia.

If you plan to go to the zoo its recommended to do the night safari. Its one of the unique Fun Activities in Singapore as it’s like an actual safari, where animals roam cageless, while you seat and view them from the comfort of a tram.

You can also apparently get to a really remote beach, away from the hustle and bustle of people and tourists called the Southern Island. There is a ferry that goes from Sentosa to these islands, and barely anyone goes there. But know that there is only 1 ferry a day back, so make sure you don’t miss it!

Botanical Gardens

If you like nature, you could give the botanic gardens a shot, they have a lovely orchard garden which you can pay $5 or something to go in. And, if you have a student card (doesn’t matter if it’s expired) with you or you can prove that you are a student, it’s free for you to enter the orchard garden! This place is huge and very beautiful, you can take a canopy walk and this is also where I saw my first Komodo Dragon.

Merlion Park

Merlion Park is another highly recommended fun activities in Singapore. You can head down here during the day and get excellent views of the Bay as well as Marina Bay Sands. You can also come here at night during one of the laser light show times I listed above for a good show.

Food Recommendations

One of the most Fun Activities in Singapore is trying all the different varieties of food and mixed cultures they have here. I highly recommend you hit the hawker centers, away from the restaurants. Hawker centers serves cheap, fresh, and amazing street food. Foods that are a must try, for

Chinese food like Chicken rice, Fried Carrot Cake, char kway teow, hokkien noodles(fried yellow seafood noodles) Bak Chor Mee (dried noodles with minced pork) and Laksa(Spicy Coconut broth with vermicelli noodles).

Indian food I recommend going for roti prata (a indian pancake), Appam (pancake with a special red sugar), rojak(Indian fruit or fried dough salad) tulang merah (Lamb bone marrow with a spicy and sweet sauce)

Malay food I recommend Mee rebus, nasi lemak(coconut rice) , mee siam, satay and mee goreng. For desserts, ice kachang (basically shaved ice with flavoured syrups) , chendol, tao suan, red bean soup, green bean soup and many others. Drinks, soursop, sugar cane juice, bandung (rose syrup with milk, this is really sweet though!) milo and avocado milkshake with gula melaka or chocolate syrup. Oh! Seafood, chilli crab, black pepper crab, salted egg crab (though it’s quite pricey), sambal stingray(yes, we do eat stingray, and it’s awesome!), sambal lala(vongole clams), Gong Gong (steam conch shells) and sambal kangkong (sweet potato leaves)

Getting Around

I recommend skipping taking the bus and take the metro instead. Reason being, its really hard to navigate with the bus, as the bus does not tell you which is the next stop. If you want to avoid the MRT or Bus entirely, you can just use Grab or Uber.

The MRT is quick and convenient, and relatively easy to get around. Each trip for both buses and trains are charged based on how many stops you take, so the further you go, the more expensive it cost you.

Single ride tickets are a better option if you are planning to visit Singapore for a short duration, or the tourist pass, depending on how often you travel around via the MRT or the bus. Tourists passes are refundable, only if you are flying. EZ link is also recommended if you are planning to visit Singapore for a longer duration. Don’t forget to bring your passport when you’re shopping, above about a $100 will get you tax rebates if you bring your receipts to the airport!

Changi Airport

Lastly, before you fly out of Singapore, you might want to check out the Changi Airport Activities as well, there’s plenty to see and do. And for FREE! You can check out the butterfly garden, as well as the sunflower garden at Terminal 3. Plus, there is also a free cinema with some of the latest movies, free console gaming and, free massage (sadly it’s just massage chairs)
